For almost 3000 years, embroidery has been part of Man’s determination to embellish his immediate environment.

Originally suppliers to Napoleon III, the Micholet, and later Lesage families have been embroidering since 1868.

And the Maison Jean-François Lesage, established in Madras in 1993, experts in embroidered home furnishings, is keeping up this tradition with its hand-made products, using the combined skills of its French staff and its 120 local Madrasi Master embroiderers.

Thanks to their thorough knowledge of their profession, their shared passion, their devotion to perfection, combined with a very contemporary dynamism, Jean-François Lesage’s workers express themselves through countless embroidery stitches and techniques that can be done only by hand, on material as varied as silk, linen, cotton, wool, velvet, leather, suede… and embellish seats, curtains, blinds, drapes, borders, bedcovers, grand drapery borders and all textile items that can be used in a house

Embroidery multiplies colours and embossments, combines materials in a most unexpected way and has no limits since it is expressed through the simplest tools the eye and the hand. Certain works of embroidery may require hundreds or even thousands of hours, bringing together on a single frame a score of master embroiderers working in concert. Often, a magnifying glass alone can reveal the minute differences that mark the richness of these works produced by 40 hands. This is the rich variety that the embroidered creations of the Maison Jean-François Lesage wish to show, with new designs meant for professionals added regularly.

The exhibition that will tour India is intended to be a presentation of the production unit through the ambience of the workplace (sound and pictures), the skill and the rich and varied work done ( heritage restoration, exclusive creations for interior decorators, reinterpretation of great masters of the art, productions for fashion). The exhibition is also intended to be a bridge connecting Indian and French culture, through embroidery, an age-old tradition of the two countries.
